I had a beautiful big black moth in my house a little while ago. I thought it was gorgeous, so velvety and soft looking, it had the big eyes on its wings and it was lovely. I took a photo and when the flash went off, the colour of those eyes wasn’t black like I thought, but a beautiful deep and brilliant blue.

It was a real shock, and a moment of pure excitement to discover something t...

I was sitting in a Sunday night house gathering on a Sunday night (der) with some of my favourite people. Favourite both because I like them and also because they are people who are after the same things I am after. God being able to be all of who God is, no matter what that looks like in their families, their communities, their own lives.

I was reflecting with a friend as people broke into...

Do you have an anthem? A song that no matter what is happening: good, bad, great, horrible, terrible, fantastic, amazing, spectacular, the Pit of Despair (cough cough) [gratuitous Princess Bride reference…] It is guaranteed to lift your mood, give you strength, make you dance, have you hollering out the words  - even if you don’t know them all. Most people I know report that it takes a com...

Have you ever felt scattered? As if there is too much on your plate to manage, or it’s too hard to keep your eye on the ball when you’re trying to keep too many balls in the air, or there are not enough fingers for too many pies? Any of those sayings that we trot out to try and explain that we’re very busy and feeling overwhelmed.

Maybe even not so busy, but still feeling overwhelmed. Or in...

The deepest rivers make the biggest impact on the landscape. Glaciers carve a path that will remain long after any trace of water in the region has gone. Hidden water, far beneath our feet is busy making beautiful places that maybe God alone will see in the lifetime of this world.

It is written that when we walk on the Narrow Way we have rivers of living water flowing in us and through us.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him… Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. Colossians 3:17, 23-24 (NIV)

I was sitting on the couch eati...

Welcome to 2016! Time is real, and oh, so insubstantial! We (humanity) have followed God’s example with day, night and seasons and made calendars for ourselves. Someday, I really hope to find out where it goes to, all this time that goes by us as we live through it…

I have learned a lesson about time this fortnight. Funny isn’t it, how life throws you curve balls. Out of the blue, something...

My Pop was a Chaplain in the Australian Army in the Second World War. When I was a school chaplain, he gave me his army chaplaincy notes. They are a pretty amazing resource. He stood with men going to and coming back from war. His notes reflect the sensitivity of the topics he needed to address in the context of turmoil. Later, he and my Gran were also missionaries in the wilds of Papua Ne...

There’s a nice little rain falling outside my window this morning. I like rain. Summer or Winter it always brings a feeling of relief, no matter what I was planning or hoping to do at the time. Having grown up on a farm, rain relieved tension, so it is built into me now. Having bought a house in the  (supposed) ‘burbs, I still watch the forecast for rain, because that’s another week that I...

I have rediscovered French Earl Grey Tea. I’ve had a Big Silver Canister of it in my tea cupboard for months and months untouched because I have been going through the process of changing the way I eat, and I didn’t think to try it without milk until last weekend when I made some into jubes… Dear Lord Jesus, I don’t know whether I like it better hot or in chewy gelatine form!

Years ago, I w...

That totes sounds like a line from a 60s’ folk song… not a particularly well written one either!

Anyway, that’s what I did. I had a dream that I was in a race to find a secret drawer in a cabinet. I won. The drawer was found. It had a lot more compartments in it than was probable. It was also empty and unfinished, as in, unrefined, raw wood, not varnished etc.

At that poi...

In general, relationships are hard. They take a heck of a lot more work than most of us are prepared to either acknowledge or put in. Especially if there is little visible pay-out for us in the end product. Humanity is a dichotomous beast in its core. I wrestle with this in myself a lot. How to be Christ-like when I can see my own motivations very clearly for what they are.

I come from a lo...

As I begin to write this, I have the lyrics to a song from The Who running around my brain. Which is topical, but not pertinent…!!

Humanity has difficulty with purposelessness and the lack of knowing who we are as an individual, set apart from other individuals. It’s one of the reasons it is easy to create mob mentality, both in a violent manner and in a sheep/shoal fashion – even when we a...

“The winter season is when roots and tubers grow.”

I recently heard this from Father after spending time in the garden on a super frosty day. I needed to hear it. It has been one of the most revelatory things I have heard from him in the last 12 months!

I think that in desert times we can often be bewildered by the process we are going through. I have heard a lot about how to position myself...

…Christ in you, the hope of Glory… Colossians 1.27 (NIV)

…your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God… 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)

There are thin places on the earth. For long years many different peoples have known their country and where the sacred sites are, the holy places, the ley lines, the dangerous places, the quiet places of the soul. That...
